Unseen
In my new work, Unseen, I focus on piano compositions by Ravel that, in my view, are permeated by a sense of loneliness and introspection on the part of the composer. Although his works are often celebrated for their technical mastery, their impressionistic textures, and their rich colors, there is something deeper beneath the surface: a subtle feeling of distance and emotional complexity that can be linked to feelings of isolation.
In Unseen, I draw inspiration from this quiet, introspective side of Ravel. Through movement and dance, I aim to delve into his complex emotional landscape and his ability to convey deeply personal emotions while creating a sense of distance and reflection. Loneliness, as perceived by Ravel and as I have experienced it myself, resonates throughout this performance, inviting the audience to feel the sensitivity hidden behind every melody.
Boléro
Boléro by Maurice Ravel is one of the most iconic works of classical music, renowned for its distinctive rhythm and the relentless intensity that builds throughout the piece. The repeated melody and the gradual orchestration create a sense of ritualistic dance, drawing the listener into an unbroken flow of movement.
In my choreography for Boléro, I combine the rhythmic pulse of the music with the dynamics of jumping on a trampoline. Each leap aligns with the rhythmic repetition of the music, following the structure of its musical development. The dancers’ movements begin with small, controlled bursts that gradually evolve into powerful jumps, capturing the feeling of the work’s progressive climax. The circular nature of the trampoline and the repetitiveness of the movements enhance the sense of continuous rise and release, offering a ritualistic dimension that mirrors the musical ritual of Boléro.
